Skye Fitzgerald, who witnessed my speaker die, was the catalyst for this project. As a remarkable filmmaker, he gave me the confidence to pursue this project. His understanding and patience during this crazy year has been unparalleled.
Loren Barr should be given credit for the musical inspiration for the project. His 11th hour creation of much needed music for the student radio doc was the catalyst for Justin to work with Loren in the resulting musical direction. While originally planned to be a pastiche, live-action emo-rock music video, the lack of any budget ultimately resulted in choosing to make the piece animated. Friends and former co-workers from Portland, OR and his new home near New York City teamed up to bring the animation into a reality. Bartek Prusiewicz designed the characters in his unique illustration style. Luis Aguirre, normally a motion graphic designer, signed up to do the heavy lifting and animate the piece. He recruited Cory Alderman to do 3d modeling of the hyper-brand villain.
The narrative resulted through a synergy of music, illustration, and conversation. The decision to make a sad and depressing animated short, changed the music’s original purpose and objectives, to one of a supporting sound track. Ralf Youtz and Gabe Batson both recorded their voices to help take the original pop vocals to another level of quality. Narratively, the decision to try and keep Justin’s voice in the song led to collaboration with Matt Davis. Matt recorded Justin’s vocals and the back up and operatic vocals by Lane Gardner. Rebecca Harris-Lee played violin for the composition. Matt helped to combine these elements with Loren’s original composition to tailor a version for the evolving animation needs.
Because animation just isn’t funny without the effects, Drew Canulette provided the excellent sound design. Going above and beyond the comedy objective, Drew accommodated our absurd deadline in a process that no sound designer should ever have to endure.
Robert Wees designed the parody website. He contributed the necessary sass to Justin’s whine on the copy. Bryce Jackson built the site in addition to providing ongoing technical guidance on disseminating the video.
Finally, but not least: Peter Irvine has provided generous pro bono legal counsel with regular first amendment reminders throughout the process. The Constitution is a wonderful thing, use it or lose it.
